Over the Winter Break, the Quid Nunc Saxophone Quartet traveled to the Midwest Clinic in Chicago Illinois. The five students (Seniors, Robin Brown and Bryant Anderson, Juniors Josh Milford-Rosales and Nick Koutras, and Sophomore Ryan Montemayor) were able to experience much of what the international convention had to offer.
The Quid Nunc Quartet was able to give a preview concert at Wheeling High School in the suburbs of Chicago. This concert featured both our Reagan Quartet and the Jazz Combo from Wheeling High School. The Wheeling Jazz Combo also performed at the Midwest Clinic. That evening the Quid Nunc Quartet was able to attend a Chicago Symphony Orchestra performance of Handel’s Messiah.
Once the Clinic started, Reagan students were able to explore the exhibit hall, attend numerous world class concerts, and meet with world renowned composers and educators. This included a rehearsal with David Maslanka, one of the leading American Composers of the day.
In preparation for their concert, the Quid Nunc Quartet performed a showcase concert in the Exhibit hall area of the convention. This informal concert allowed the students to play in a low pressure setting and get a run through of their music. After this concert, the Quid Nunc Quartet had their official rehearsal with their guest artist. The Mirasol Quartet. The Mirasol Quartet from Texas Tech University joined Quid Nunc to create a saxophone choir for the Midwest performance. The rehearsal was also attended by composers Carol Britton Chambers (who was having a piece premiered at the Quid Nunc concert) and Dr. Jose Riojas from the University of Illinois, Chicago (who was the arranger for the saxophone choir music performed by Quid Nunc and Mirasol).
Finally, the Quid Nunc concert came and was a huge success. The students played exceptionally well and received wonderful response from an audience that included several of the countries leaders in music education and composition.
The Quid Nunc Quartet would like to thank the Reagan Band Parents, Reagan High School and Principal Brenda Shelton for their support throughout the Midwest process. Finally, a thank you to Mr. Jody Noblett, Mr. Jarrett Lipman, and Ms. Diana Schumacher from the North East ISD Fine Arts office.
